Hey everyone
Just wondering if anyone knows where to find a smaller well gas generator (8.5k-12k) to power a couple miners.
It seems the only ones I can find are 75k+ which is way more than I’ve got gas for. I’ve considered buying a natural gas home back up generator as trying to convert it, but I’m insure how that would work as raw well gas is lower BTU.
Any input or suggestions are welcome
Note: I’ve worked in oil and gas for years, but power generation is still pretty new to me
you could look into https://www.generac.com/ they make small natural gas generators for residential use in case the power goes out. You can get a 10KW unit for ~$3200 or a 24KW unit for $6400
My question is if one of these can run off of unrefined well gas as it is lower BTU and contains more contaminats
I’m sure it will run, but I’d think it wouldn’t last long and/or the unit would require more maintenance. So probably not advised…
I’ve heard from the guys that use flare gas have the same issue but they also use the larger gen sets and from what I understand they do have to do more maintenance. maybe it would be worth looking into getting some of the contaminates out if you can. Not sure what would be involved there though. You’d probably have a better idea given your experience?
Only a little bit? My job with the gas pretty well ends with putting it in the pipeline. I’m aware of chemical treatments and some refinement processes, but I don’t operate them.
My very basic understanding is that the wellgas can cause the generator to run lean, and you want to make sure the gas is very dry before it goes in. This may very well end up as a “fuck around and find out” situation
Those small Gens are not meant for longevity at 3600 rpm. I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t live long enough to get ROI. You would also need a small compressor to get it to up to pressure, what 7 inches of water? Maybe look for an old oilfield engine meant to run of scavenged gas and years of service. G
