So I’ve started mining Bitcoin in my garage and thought I could craft a box in an attempt to dampen the sound of my Antminer S19J Pro & improve the air circulation. It sounded like a fun project at the time.
The goal was to not hear the miner from inside the house. Lol instead of dampening the sound, I made it worse. In fact, the fan speed is now way higher than it was prior to putting it in the box. My fan speed went from ~4400-4700 rpm to ~5700 rpm.
As you can see from the photos, I tried to account for airflow with a fan to suck out the heat & create a vacuum effect for pulling in fresh air. The fan is pulling around 400 cfm on max setting. I have the intake pulling filtered air from my crawl space & the exhaust pushing outside via one of the crawl space vents. Originally, I had the fan sucking out the exhaust & then tried to swap it to push fresh air into the intake. Both attempts resulted in higher fan speeds; which, resulted in being louder.
Does anybody have any recommendations on how I can decrease the speed of the fans for my miner? This idiot would clearly appreciate any helpful suggestions!
How restrictive is the air filter you are using, could it be too restrictive? I have never setup one of these, but all the posts I have seen always show the ducting going right to the intake and coming right off the exhaust so the heat goes straight out of the box instead of circulating, I would think the exhaust duct would be a big factor so the hot air isn’t just hanging around, it is actually being forced out of the box. You could also try removing the fan you added and just let the miner pull air on its own to see if that helps. I really think the exhaust duct to the outlet hole you have will help.
Also, maybe move where your miner is sitting in the box so the exhaust has less restriction and a straighter shot out of the outlet hole for the box when you hook up the ducting
@nastyneste !
Ok, these photos are to show that I’m not a ‘make thing look pretty’ kind of crypto farmer, but a utilitarian that can get the heat out and dampen the noise of a KD5, CK5, and a KD-box, I’m still waiting for one more KD-box (coming soon) and the L7 (waiting since August)
This is my basement.
The sound foam is glue gunned on recycled boxes then hung with a stapler or zip tie or stacked on the wire shelf that houses the miners
You created a confined space with a lot of turbulence. You want laminar flow.
Use the miner fans to push the heat out.
I fabricated my air scoops from cardboard and HVAC duct tape.
I sit in my family room directly above, upstairs, from this crypto operation and I have to try to hear the noise.
Your hard box is like an old school speaker with restricted air flow, amplifying the noise and choking the intake.
