I ha a bunch of ol super long network cable, so bought a case of bulk cat 5e an mae custom lengths and it is probably in my hea but im getting better connections and I think have eliminated my “offline” message from my rig… is this placebo affect or was there actually a point to doing this?
Not sure what the solution was here, sounds like a fluke. But I would be interested in seeing a more in depth study showing the difference between cat6, cat5 cables and how the length of the cable affects connection stability.
Unless your original Ethernet cables were poorly made or got damaged somehow it doesn’t really make much of a difference. The only difference between CAT5, CAT6(a) & CAT7 are the windings and sheath, giving better performance over long runs. Maybe you just needed new cables
CAT5 and up can be run over 500 feet with no degrade of signal.
The CAT5e can be used for PoE from what I can remember about that version.
