Compass Mining is untrustworthy! See copied email below. They waited until it was time to be running to notify me they sold the unit to someone else. (probably due to the price of the unit going up 2k the day after I bought it).
Hi David,
“I wanted to follow up on the payment you sent on 11/18 for an Antminer S19j Pro 100 TH unit. We sent an email a couple weeks ago and I’m not sure if you received it. Unfortunately, this unit was sold prior to your payment being received and we will be issuing a full refund.”
Also my contact at Compass had no idea and I was scheduled for a zoom confirmation on 12/31 for starting it up. Seems to me they sold it to a higher bidder and just tossed me out the back! I’m extremely dissatisfied and this is very poor customer service.
If you choose to mine with them you better cross your fingers and hold your breath until your unit actually is up and hashing.
what if what he’s telling you is actually the truth? Do you have any proof that your order was somehow in front of whoever compass sold the miner to? You shouldn’t call a company untrustworthy so lightly.
They took my payment, and kept it for weeks. They were in contact with me throughout this time scheduling and helping answer other questions. They also have similar units for sale with the same start date but not the same price (still currently available). A truly trustworthy vendor that made the mistake they are claiming would honor the sale with one of their other machines. One with good customer service would make that happen without even causing any issue for the customer. They would just let the customer know it was now going to be hosted at a different location. How do I know this is the correct way to do business? Because I own a small business of my own, and I would be embarrassed of this treatment. It’s surprising but sometimes really small customers are actually the big ones just fishing for a good interaction first.
Thanks for letting us know about your experience. It does look like what they did to you was in fact untrustworthy. It is so true about how small customers are actually the big ones.
I totally agree with Benmines if you are a company like Compass Mining providing a HIGH-quality service “supposedly” what is 1000/2000 USD compared to f***ng a client. You are not only selling mining hardware they are also making a profit on the custody of the hardware they bought already from you. They should try to find some other solution instead of just giving a refund. Thanks for explaining your situation Benmines that is exactly the point of having open Forums like this.
Agreed completely @Benmines . The way they handled does not appear to have been the proper way to keep the customer happy, nor is it in their best long-term interest.
It all comes down to hard dollars vs soft dollars, and companies all too often only focus on the former. E.g., in your case the hard dollars are the extra income that Compass makes by screwing you over and not making it right. They get a few thousand more $$$. Yay for them.
Soft dollars are hard to calculate, but real nonetheless and often well exceed the hard dollars saved. In this case, the soft dollars represent foregone income from lost customers, i.e. potential customers who are dissuaded from ordering after hearing about the company’s business practices from disappointed customers like yourself.
Even if they only lose one customer based on you stating your experience on public forums, that loss will exceed the hard dollars saved by not making it right by you. Companies that behave this way consistently are not in it for the long-term. Hopefully, this was an isolated incidence of poor customer service.
I’d reach out to Whit Gibbs or Tom Heller directly and make your case. If they’re not responsive or dismissive, I’d join their Discord (if not already) and post your experience there. Both Gibbs and Heller are on there often. Your post will get some attention for sure.
Yes, One case where they choose to not follow through on a deal where they accepted the money and kept it for weeks would make them untrustworthy. They have the exact miner I purchased with the same starting date available for sale on their website (also hosted in the US). I have a meeting coming up. This was scheduled for onboarding me with my miner (the one they sold to me). If at this time they choose to honor the sale and provide what they sold me (which anyone with good business practices would do) I will come on here and let you all know. If they choose to screw me for a few grand because they can. Well then they are untrustworthy by definition.
They have refunded my money. It is nice to see that you can trust Compass that you will get a miner or your money back. However I am disappointed with the way this was handled. They refused to use another similar miner to fill my order. I guess if you order from them cross your fingers until it goes online.
Hi - Can I ask what made you go with Compass as opposed to other hosting service providers? Also, with 10 units, can I ask if you’re mining under an LLC and if so, what was the process like to get it set up and purchase your miners?
Thats super frustrating. My first purchase for a used Antminer Z15 from Newegg was canceled about 1 week later and the storefront relisted it for a higher price. I ordered a second one days later, and the same thing happened. So, I gave up on the Z15. Now there is tons of Z15’s available on Newegg, but forget it, if it’s too much trouble, it’s not worth it.
Too bad Compass operates in a similar way! They should treat their new customers better and offer you something for wasting your time. Thanks for letting us know about your experience.
In my case I went with Compass Mining since it was a good choice at the time. Now I see that they are struggling, and fortunately I am not among the plebs are are currently being affected by what’s currently happening.
Now, all this does not mean that it was all roses and rainbows, I was among the plebs affected by the South Carolina facility crisis from last year, and as a result all my miners where delayed. I was also among the BITMAIN L7 debacle as well. To be fair what happened, and is currently happening is outside Compass Mining’s control.
I know that right now a lot of plebs are being affected by constant delays, and constant downtime. And let’s not get started with the BitRiver/Russia Sanction debacle that is currently affecting thousands of Compass plebs, plus all the facility problems that they’ve been facing since last year.
I can say that I’ve been a very lucky pleb with all my mining equipment online and hashing, and I am very grateful to @VoskCoin for introducing me to them, and if I had to make the same decision again, I won’t hesitate to choose Compass once again.
I know that in every venture you do in life there will always be risk involved, hardships, difficulty, stress, and obstacles to overcome; but like the old saying goes: no risk no reward.
