Crypto mining newbie

I am researching how to start mining crypto currency and am getting overwhelmed with my lack of knowledge and confidence in taking the first steps. I have a desktop computer that is at least 10 years old. I’m unsure of what to mine, what hardware to get, what kind of security I need to protect my mining, and if my current desktop pc will be strong enough to run the hardware. I need some guidance into what crypto to start mining and getting the proper hardware/software. Anyone able to help a nervous newbie get started?

Watch as many youtube videos as you can find. There are so many ways to start mining. You will have to find what works for you and the equipment you have. For me I bought a kingwin frame and just started adding parts as I could find them. I used ebay and amazon to find what I needed. Just do your research and watch for good deals. If you study it enough you will be able to see the good deals. Look up videos on how to mine with the equipment you already have. Good luck!

I’m new to this in the last few months myself. U need a video card with at least 4gb’s and a computer that has pcie slots. That said 4gb’s won’t mine ETH which is still most times the most profitable until it goes to ETH2 which will be proof of stake and not proof of work anymore ( time frame unsure). I have one rig of 3 cards Nivida 1660 super 6gb and 2 rx570 8gb cards running ETH, plus my gaming rig running 2070 super. I have been running them for 59 days starting with 2nd card and added other cards within that time frame 1 at a time. I made without elec cost taken out $38 mining with two cards on nicehash $38 in BTC and then $320 in ETH using all 4 cards as I got them. I have a laptop with a 1650ti 4gb that I use for surfing that has made couple hundred RVN and a few ZIL and I just updated my kids computer with a 1660ti 6gb that I have mining ETH and ZIL when he’s not on it gaming. Been waiting 2 months for my Bobcat Helium miner to get here. So like fishing get a pole in the water to start and enjoy doing it. All depends how much u want to spend! Motherboard any used board with pcie slots best to have at least one 16 lane slot to just stick a card in and mine to get u going like a old gaming rig with windows installed to run at Nicehash but card has to be 6gb on there. I have picked up 2 rx570 from EBAY new for $330 each. I’m now after some reading running 4 on Hiveos for free and running just miners on 2 others learning and having fun. Its a fun hobby and u maybe able to make some money just by having the right coin at the right time someday also. After the great wallet dance I have many wallets, COINOMI may have the most coin options.

I been there ,still kinda am. YouTube overwhelms you with 50 different wallet’s ,20 different mining sites to use all in the the same video because of sponsor’s and etc. So starting you don’t need someone’s life story or everything out there. You need the basics. A computer ,a graphics card ( 4g or higher) , a psu and stating I would just go to nicehash. Read sites like nicehash and whattomine to figure out what you want to mine.

Watch the archived videos from this very site, VoskCoinTalk. Then fire type specific questions at us.

Everyone starts knowing nothing, so you can’t be afraid of that. If you are entering crypto you need to be well informed and willing to take risk. it will take time and it will cost you a lot when starting depending on the budget. i recommend cryptospacegame if you like board games. watching youtube, searching on forums. searching in the web, slowly you will understand it. everybody has been there having someone to guide you willl also, if you can find someone to help you it would be great and much easier done learning solo. Goodluck

Don’t feel bad. There’s some of us who’ve been mining for years and we’re still learning new things. Yes, it can overwhelming because there’s so much to know. Like what others have said, watch plenty of YouTube videos. See what other people are doing. I will say that your computer alone won’t get you anywhere unless it’s a decently built gaming computer. You can probably still use some of the parts but if you’re going the GPU mining route then I suggest buying all new stuff. Vosk has several GPU mining build videos, although dated, it’s still the same concept
