Dust in my L7 affects performance

I have one L7. It worked perfect for 2 months then blade 3 stopped working(temperature errors). Bitmain support suggested to clean it. I unscrew the fans and blow pressure air on it. It had dust of course but not so bad. I put it back together and everything worked again for nearly 2 months. Today it blade 3 stopped hashing again. Once again unscrew fans and dusted everything. The L7 seems to be working normally again.

Do you clean your miners? I have never cleaned the goldshell boxes. How often you clean? Any tips? Suggestions? Should I install some kind of filter? It’s kind of tedious to unscrew everything, it’s there an easier way?

monthly hit it with air and you should be good for much longer

Do you unscrew the fans? I unscrew the fans and block them to properly dust them also to properly have access to the boards.

I have a shroud installed, so it’s not easy to unscrew everything

My L7 is as failing due to heat and a faulty fan which I’d diagnosed after stripping it apart and cleaning it carefully with air from my compressor. I can adjust the air pressure from the compressor so I ran it at half pressure to avoid damaging anything.

The hash boards on the outlet were literally clogged up with dust and crap. The outlet fans and grill on the rear were also clogged up so it was in dire need of cleaning.

It’s straight forward to strip it apart and remove the fans and hash boards. Just take your time I ended up using an anti-static mat and earthing it.

I might look into the possibility of putting some form of filter in front of the input fans as long as I can find something suitable that’s filters and allows for enough airflow.

hmm, blowing out dust once every 1 or 2 months seems excessive.

Once you blow it out, do you see higher temps on the 3rd card compared to the others?

if so there could be an issue with the mounting of the heat sinks.
after looking at some pictures of the L7 hashboard it seems that the asic chips each have their own heatsink. this means if one heat sink breaks loose that one chip may halt the entire board for over temp.

rock it back and forth and see if you hear any clinging or noise that could indicate a loose heatsink.

if it is loose you can thermal epoxy it back using something like this

There is no loose heatsink. I opened the machine and can see the blades.
The temp on blade 3 was high before dusting, hashrate lower than the other blades. After dusting all 3 seem similar.

Drake, I don’t have a L7 but I have S19s. I would recommend a dusting schedule based on your environment. It sounds like a monthly maintenance would be a good place to start and go from there.

You could build a box, add filters, etc but then you end up spending money on replacing filters. I wasted a lot of money trying to control environmental factors only to realize I wasted a lot of time and money :grinning:
