non tech person here. wondering if i can get an opinion/review on the validity/potential of Harmony protocol’s tech and whether it’s a gem or if I should concentrate my efforts on other stuff like nrg, helium etc. A few DEXs have launched on it and it’s cheap and fast - mostly its cheap enough for me but i dont want to think i can stay long term if the lifespan may not be longterm.

All are smart chains and they are here for long term run… All of them are under great development and you can invest in the Defi you wish

Harmony’s tech is solid however their marketing practices as an organization have not been entirely so.
I would urge you to take a closer look at Fantom, Polygon and Binance Smart Chain. There is a very simple bridge between BSC and Polygon now using ApeSwap Banana.
