I’m just learning about this helium mining stuff. Wondering if I’m wasting my time. The closest hot spost are 18 kilometers to town, there are maybe a dozen there. At about 50k a couple more clusters open up. 70k finds another town that has a decent number of units. 150k is Washington DC and which is just solid green on the helium map. Am I to far from civilization for this stuff? The area is at sea level, vary flat, wooded, decent amount of water. I’m close to a river, the water should carry radio waves pretty good.
The worst part of this looks like the 6 month wait on getting the hot spot.
Might be worth adding, my house is out in the open, small development, and a field across the street. Probably 800 meters to the north to the next tree line. 1.5k to the south, maybe 300m east and west. Not sure how much difference trees make.
If you can get the antenna up above the trees you’ll be fine. You can easily connect over 18km if there is good line of sight and quality 5-8dbi antennas beings used. 50-70km isn’t out of the question either.
Thanks for the info. If I can pull off 50-70k That’ll get me seeing 35 or so existing hotspots from my house.
Ideally I’d set it up at my house to learn with. But I could use my parents house which is 20 miles north and gets me closer to more spots. My inlaws place might be even better, but that’ll be a bit of a PIA, due to the distance.
Should I be concerned seeing the hot spots closets to me did like $3 in the last month? Not that I expect to get rich with this or anything, but $3/mo. it’ll never pay for itself. I’m somewhat assuming these people just put it up somewhere in their house and didn’t make any attempt to maximize their system.
And that’s where I’d like to end up. I figure first I’d do one at my place to make sure I fully understand what I’m getting into. Then expand with the other 2 locations.
Keep in mind that just because there are 20-30 hotspots in range does not mean you’ll see all or even 50% of them. Some could be disconnected, some behind a hill, poor antenna/reception, etc.
