Highest Safe Ambient Temp

Hello.

I’m trying to decide between at L3+ and a Mini Doge.

It looks like the L3+ is more profitable.

If I got the L3+ it would have to go in my garage because of noise and power requirements. My concern is the ambient temp in the garage gets to be very high in the summer, like 125f. Is that going to damage the unit?

125 is insanely high for a garage…do you live on top of an active volcano??? In serious-ness though, yes these machines can handle up to and a little over 90f without pulling back on the hashing power, but I would think 125 is too high to operate them safely. Do you have any windows or anything you can open to keep the garage a little cooler?

Bitmains web site says the highest temp on L3+ chips is 85C that’s 185F. PCB can go to 90C 194F. I have 4 L3+ and they are all running at 70C or lower. Chips can burn out. I haven’t had any yet and hopefully never. https://support.bitmain.com/hc/en-us/articles/360005088914-Normal-Operating-Temperature-Range
In the summer just find a way to exhaust the hot air in your garage and run the L3+ at full fan. they should be fine.

The ambient temp where I live gets up 125f, so my garage probably gets to be a little higher.

That’s good. It should be ok in the garage then, even when it’s hot out. Worst case scenario I can reduce the hash rate and max out the fans I guess.

It’s not too much to worry about that ambient air as the air that goes over the heatsinks is at volocity so it is cooler than ambient. Think sitting in front of a fan on a hot day. That air feels cooler. Humidity is what you need to watch out for.

Got it. We’ll is very dry here. So at least I’ve got that going for me.

Sounds like you live near me in Central California. Either that or in Arizona, haha.

Anyway, there are several methods to keeping your asic from overheating. It’ll cost more money but keeping your equipment from overheating or temperature fluctuation is key to making your investment last. Build a cooling room inside your garage could help. No need to explain, just google it. The only thing about that method is keeping the humidity low. It’s very doable so if you got the extra cash I’d say take that approach. Either that or find a new spot to place your setup other than your garage
