Is a PDU Necessary for ASIC mining in US?

So, we’re finally getting close to our mining shed 1.0(but it’s a decent one, so let’s say it’s version 1.5) So, we have our single Whatsminer running currently, with a standard Tripplite PDU, one is running fine. My question is, ‘why do you even need a PDU to begin with?’ I’ve attached a picture of a L6-20P to C19 Power Cord, can this just be plugged into our outlet and not have a PDU? I just see everyone using a PDU, but ask is it necessary? We’re looking at 6-8 ASIC’s so kind of at the point where we really need to look at the most efficient way to power this. There are also options like Raptor Power Systems Cryptoslayer 3.0, which says it’s a massive PDU. Or buy a bunch of single PDU’s. Just kind of at one of those forks that I really want to do the safest, yet cost effective setup we can. Any help is appreciated and please let me know any questions.

Not necessarily required, but it offers surge protection which is a big benefit. If you were to throw a surge protector on the panel for the outlets you should be okay plugging them in directly.
