Power Bill Budget Billing

Ok, I’ve ordered my first S19 Miner and have been getting everything ready for delivery day. I made a trip to my local power company to pay my current bill and ask a few questions. My current cost is around .11/kWh. While I was talking with the Power Co employee, she offered me a program where my power usage is averaged, and I would end up paying the same amount every month. When she informed me that next month’s bill and the following bills would be $112 per month, I said sure. I’m wondering how long its going to take the S19 to surpass $112 and if the Power Co would notice. Anyone else had a situation like this?

Surely you don’t think they are going just charge you $112 per month when your usage doubles. What will happen is in a month or 2 your bill will increase to make up for the increase and the balance of what you have used over. No free lunch… just delaying the bill.

Yeah, kinda figured that, Ill ride it till they notice it and settle up.

Let’s say it’s 3KW @ 0.11 KWh all day for a month. That’ll be $241 a month to run it.
Or maybe you go to low power mode and get 1.8 - 2 KW - let’s round it to 2KW. That will be $160 a month.
If they have you on an averaged rate and the first 2 months are already set, month 3 onwards will be adding the $241 to your $112 so likley to be around $353. If that gets hard to manage, you are stuck with it until the average is reassed. Sounds like that might be every 2 months. If you were on pay as you go, you can cut the cost immediatley by turning it off and not having to wait a month or 2 for the averaged price to reduce.

Thanks for the info. I live in a beautiful rural area, this year construction will start right next to my property on a $141,000,000 solar project. The community thinks it will be an eyesore. It would be nice to tap into that line.

Typically what I have seen is the budget billing is for residential customers and to provide consistent billing year round vs the seasonal fluctuations. They will base it on the history up to the point you sign up and any changes in their power rates. When you add or remove any device or appliance which can drastically change your electric usage you throw off their estimates until they have time to adjust for it. I am not certain how often they re-evaluate the estimation and how the handle when their estimations are short and what length of time period is required to determine if it is “short”. I would expect they have already planned around collecting and handling shortages though for the average consumer it is likely rare that they end up with a shortage.
