Dumb question but can you mine chia or other coins by using HDDs and SSDs out of everyday computers? I’m more familiar with Asic and simple plug in the 3 log in lines but I’m interested on repurpose all these I have with my line of work we’re we get a dozen or more a week from recycling them/wiping out for my customers then donated to us, and all we do is throw them away and or screw them into my wall for decorations lol, if I can learn ways of any passive income running them that info would be great to hear either way I’m interested on everyone’s thoughts and opinions
I set up a command line Chia on a Pi - but it wasn’t fun or fast to plot or easy to understand.
So I went an got an ex lease Lenovo Tiny PC adn moved it all to teh Windows GUI version of Chia. Stll pretty slow to plot, but a much better experience than the Pi. It’s filled a coulple of 6TB drives and is half way through the 12TB one. I’ve got the drives in an Orico 5bay USB:
No cages required. Drives just slot in. Only thing to watch is added or removing a drive resets the entire box and the drives all get disconnected and reconnected. They don’t come back up as the same drive number. They keep their letter, but in disk management they are all different. So I name them for the slot they are in.
If your drives are small, like sub 2TB, your power use will be comparativley high. I wuold say 4TB drives would be a minimum, although I’m not usig any of the 4’s I have from retired clients NAS boxes. I’ll probably buy another couple of 12’s or bigger when the plotting has finished on this one to fill the 5 slots. Afer that we’ll see if I’ll get another box or not…
What size are these HDDs and SSDs? If all your company does is throw them away, I might be interested in getting some cheap, if possible.
Range from 250GB,500GB,1TB and some 2TB
